The Hair Transplant Process

Dr. Matt believes in providing our patients with a clear understanding of the hair restoration journey. From your initial consultation to the follow-up appointments, the goal is to ensure you feel informed, supported, and confident throughout the process. Here’s what you can expect:
Step 1: Consultation

Your Personalised Hair Restoration Plan
The journey begins with a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Matt Egan, where we take the time to understand your hair restoration goals.
During the consultation, we will:
-
Assess the degree and pattern of your hair loss.
-
Examine the donor area (usually the back or sides of your scalp) to evaluate its density and suitability for transplantation.
-
Discuss your medical history to ensure the procedure is safe and appropriate for you.
-
Create a personalised treatment plan, including the recommended technique (FUE or FUT), the number of grafts needed, and the expected results.
You’ll also have the opportunity to ask questions, view before-and-after photos, and learn about what to expect during and after the procedure.

Step 2: The Surgery

Day of the Procedure
Hair transplant surgery is performed in our state-of-the-art clinic, designed for your comfort and care. Here’s what happens on the day of your surgery:

-
Preparation
-
You’ll be welcomed by our friendly team and made comfortable.
-
Dr Matt will go through the consent process and design your hair transplant, drawing a natural hairline to suit your facial features. This is your opportunity to plan your surgery with Dr Matt. Photos from multiple angles are taken to ensure you are 100% happy with the design before we proceed.
-
-
Harvesting Hair Follicles
-
If you’re undergoing FUE, individual hair follicles are extracted from the donor area using a specialised punch tool.
-
If FUT is recommended, a small strip of skin containing hair follicles is removed and dissected under a microscope.
-
-
Recipient Area Preparation
-
Tiny incisions are made in the recipient area to match the natural direction and density of your hair.
-
-
Implanting Hair Follicles
-
The harvested follicles are carefully implanted into the prepared sites.
-
This meticulous process ensures a natural hairline and an even distribution of hair.
-

Duration
Depending on the number of grafts, the procedure can take 4 to 8 hours. Throughout, you can relax, watch TV, or listen to music.

Step 3: Post-Surgery Recovery and Follow-Up

Immediate Recovery
After the surgery, you’ll receive detailed aftercare instructions to ensure optimal healing and results.
-
Minor redness, swelling, or tenderness in the treated areas is normal and subsides within a few days.
-
You’ll be advised to avoid strenuous activities and direct sunlight for a short period.
-
One of the team will call you on days 1 and 7 following your surgery to ensure your initial recovery is going to plan
-
Dr Matt will provide you with his personal mobile number, so that you can contact about any concerns during this time

Follow-Up Appointments
We believe that post-surgery care is just as important as the procedure itself. Our team will schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and address any concerns.

Growth Timeline

-
Weeks 1-3: The transplanted hair may shed—a natural part of the process known as “shock loss.”
-
Months 3-6: New hair growth begins, and you’ll notice fine hairs appearing in the transplanted areas.
-
Months 6-12: Hair density improves significantly as the follicles continue to grow.
-
Months 12-18: Full results are visible, with thicker, natural-looking hair.
